Steampunk in the interior +75 style photos

Some people prefer a quiet, familiar classic in their home, while others prefer to plunge into experiments. Such people want to create around themselves an exclusive atmosphere that will breathe individuality. This category is suitable for non-standard style steampunk (steam pool). Visually, it resembles the situation of the houses of the beginning of the 20th century, into which some uncharacteristic changes were made. As if the story at the turn of the century turned the other way and went along an alternative path, letting unusual, coarse details and complex mechanisms into the classic Victorian premises.

History of style

In those days, when steampunk was only in its infancy, the “heavy” and bulky classical style with the remnants of the Victorian era had not yet left the house completely, although it had already begun to be moved slowly towards a symbolic exit. People are tired of stiffness and pomp, I wanted something new, simple and original. At the junction of the epochs between the outgoing “backward century” and the progressive era of science and technology that replaced it, a fundamentally new “industrial” direction was born. It became a breath of fresh air, which burst into the interiors of the first of the most affluent houses, and then spread everywhere.

However, not everything was so simple, although the beginnings of the direction appeared already at the beginning of the 20th century, it finally formed only in the early 80s. The word itself came from the pen of an American science fiction. He simply did not know what genre to take his new work to and came up with this trend on his own, thereby losing the nose of an already tired cyberpunk. The key role is played by the first part of “steam”, which literally translates from English as “steam”. The source of inspiration for the creators of steampunk served steam engines of the late XIX century. The abundance of pipes and complex mechanisms is considered a canon of style. The second part of the “punk” does not have a literal translation, but in colloquial English it means “trashy”.

Popular musical groups that promoted individual freedom bordering on anarchy played into the hands of the popularization of punk. The “fathers” of the style, who indirectly had a hand in him, are considered to be HG Wells, Jules Verne and Mary Shelley. In their works, they created pictures that were utopian for that time, as if they were panoramas from the future.

By the way, steampunk is not only a trend in interior design, just the same name has a characteristic style in clothes, music, cinema, painting and science fiction. Some fans go further and are adjacent to the subculture of the same name, which has its own rules and canons.

To suit

Steampunk in the interior is chosen by individuals who want to go beyond the usual. The owner of the apartment, where the old man coexists with coarse technological elements, can only be an eccentric or a zealous fan of famous science fiction writers. Such people, as a rule, have a rich imagination and choose creative professions: artists, fashion designers, writers, designers, journalists, sculptors. Perhaps they are driven by the desire to differ from the rest, to have a highlight even in the interior of the apartment, but more often such unusual personalities just want to make the fairy tale a reality and revive strange and grotesque images from favorite books or their own imagination.

Character traits

Steampunk has several branches, a fine line of differences between them is quite difficult to identify:

  • Steampunk fantasy;
  • Technical steam cooker;
  • Classic Victorian Steampunk.

The first direction is subject to the motto "What would a house look like if ...". It is born exclusively by fantasy, and is embodied by whole images. Steampunk fantasy is the freest style, it allows any liberties. The second direction is characterized by a large concentration of coarse parts and rigid materials. The old “base”, on which the futuristic elements are strung, overlaps with them and plays the role of an extremely dull, contrasting background. In the classic paropank prevail Victorian motifs. They occupy almost 80% of the overall picture of the interior and are only slightly diluted with items that are non-standard for that era: pistons, levers, gears and full-fledged steam units. For the style there are the main characteristics:

  • It is necessary to have natural materials in the decoration and vintage furniture.
  • The presence of decorative things come from the Victorian era.
  • The presence of items that were made with their own hands.

The peculiarities include the characteristic location of the industrial “stuffing”, which in another situation would be hidden behind the panels.

Do not confuse steampunk decoration of the room with the result of the usual disorder of the owners, who are too lazy to hide the radiators or pipes. Style is born on the basis of the harmony of elegance with rudeness. This can be called the main thesis direction.

Colors and materials

In this designer steampunk you will never find plastic or synthetics. These materials are associated with low cost and practicality that style does not recognize. Emphasis is placed on different types of wood, metal, glass, stone and brick. The main material is always wood, since almost the entire Victorian half of the room is made using it. If there is no possibility at all, then some resort to materials that imitate natural materials. But such a "forgery" must be of high quality to match the atmosphere.

Of the fabrics, preference is given to silk, satin, chiffon, leather and linen. The color picture is necessarily brown. He in different shades usually takes more than half of the room. With the help of gray and black halftones, the effect of smoke from the room is achieved and the feeling of a soaring pair is created. Brass and bronze are always present in the decor elements.

Steampunk allows bright colors: turquoise, deep blue, wine red, dark green. These tones only shade individual details on a common brown background, but in no case do not overtighten the attention entirely on themselves.

Walls

The nature of the wall decoration will depend on the overall situation. If the furniture and decorative elements abound with small details, mechanisms and gears, then the wall is plastered with calm tones with an unobtrusive pattern. If the situation is as simple as possible, then you can choose a dark wallpaper with a subtle but voluminous pattern. Also on the walls are often left "crumbling" plaster, which allegedly accidentally opens the old layer of brick or rough stone. Such "holes" can be created around the perimeter of the room. Especially effectively they look at the corners and behind the surfaces on which they place the decorative details of the classical style.

Floor and ceiling

The floor is usually covered with natural wood. In order to save, it is permissible to replace with a material that skillfully imitates it. In the kitchen and in the bathroom use tiles the color of stone or marble. In particularly expensive versions, the floor in the bathroom may look like stone pavers with all its irregularities and natural defects. Steampunk always strives upwards, so the ceilings must be high. If there is a problem with this in the apartment, they are visually drawn with color and light. A large number of arches, columns and "steps" are welcomed. Traditionally, ceilings are decorated in soothing colors, among which classic white leads.

Furniture and accessories

In the steampunk apartment, the presence of globes in gilded holders, maps, antique telephones, binoculars, barometers, typewriters, blueprints, compasses and accessories of travelers who went on dangerous expeditions is at your own risk. Naturally you should not forget about brass pipes, bolts, pistons, levers, screws and an abundance of gears of different dimensions. Some of them may give off metallic luster, recently polished parts, and some are artificially aged and twitch with rust.

We must not forget that the main features of the “character” of the steam tank are displayed in detail. But the furniture usually remains strict and calm. Preference is given to natural wood, which has found its use in bulky closets, beds and tables. Any signs of technical progress (televisions, microwaves, speakers, etc.) should be skillfully disguised in the interior. The use of futuristic motifs and in the individual details of furniture is permissible. The main role here is played by brass pipes, of which legs, handles, or "border" of objects are made.

Lighting

In steampunk use natural light, which enters the room through the open windows, curtained with thin tulle in the frame of heavy curtains. Artificial light usually flows from several sources, each of which is located on a separate level. The lighting is created as diffuse as possible, since a certain futuristic gloom should remain in the room. The style accepts only a creative approach, so you should not be surprised at the design move in the form of a huge airship stuck in the ceiling, which is hollow inside and also serves as a chandelier. “Naked” incandescent bulbs with minimal decor are welcome. Lamps, as a rule, are designed no less creatively: they are made of things whose functionality is completely different. For example, a lamp can be hidden in a globe or closed with a “drawing” cloth in a classic lamp.

In the interior of the living room

A steam room-style living room can be equipped with dark brown soft leather furniture. Windows curtain heavy curtains with a classic twisted pattern. On the walls, family portraits alternate with old maps under glass in bronze frames. Racks of life battered by life, a telescope on a gilded stand, a compass and a barometer of strange construction freely settled on the racks. There is a soft brown carpet on the floor, and beige wallpaper with an unobtrusive pattern of the world map decorates the wall. One of the corners can be “damaged by time”: there are no wallpapers on it, but a part of the brickwork has become bare. The coffee table is made from a combination of glass and brass tubes. Instead of a lamp, there is an original arrangement of pipes, bolts and gears on it, which is topped with a simple incandescent lamp. The TV stand is decorated under sheets of metal with coarse rivets, and the very miracle of technology looks like one of the windows of Nautilus, Captain Nemo.

In the interior of the bedroom

In the bedroom you can create a real bunker, a cabin for a ship or a cabin of a submarine. The bed is set up bulky, made of heavy and durable wood with neat carvings in the best traditions of the Victorian era. It is covered with coarse fabrics of gray, blue, burgundy or lilac shades. Above the heads of sleeping ones you can place a giant compass, an impressive clock, an old drawing or an abstract composition of obligatory gears, cranes, bolts and other mechanical accessories. The walls can be decorated with gray steel wallpaper that mimic sheets of metal, and the room divided into zones with decorative arches, reinforcing the similarity with the submarine. A classic dressing table or a simple chest of drawers is decorated with pipes and decorated on top with a globe. The whole bedroom should breathe the spirit of futurism, which the classic preserved in it desperately resists.

In the interior of the kitchen

A paropunk kitchen looks more like a laboratory for conducting innovative experiments than a cooking room. The worktop and main working area is made of wood (cherry, oak) or marble. The floor is covered with tiles that mimic the texture and color of the stone. The set is made in dark or light uncompromising colors. The handles on the furniture are necessarily metal, stylized as Victorian style. Brass and bronze look more effective against the background of ebony, which in turn contrasts with the laying of white brick on the walls. They also place large panels with a chaotic set of "technical" elements.

Such a detail of the decor is easy to make yourself. The hood can be made of sheet iron or “trim” a metal barrel with coarse rivets. Do not forget about the placement of decorative elements around the perimeter of the kitchen: on the bar, window sills and wall shelves. Above the table is placed the original lamp, the height of which is regulated by a simple but outdated mechanism.

In the interior of the bathroom

The walls of the bathroom are decorated with waterproof wallpaper with a careless graphic pattern. Natural for this room water pipes in any case do not hide. On the contrary, they are put on public display, and sometimes replaced by more bulky and multi-component (with a large number of bends and knees). The floor is also decorated in dark colors: it is covered with tiles with a rough pattern (black marble, rough and porous stone).

If near the bathroom itself a piece of the wall is accidentally “bare”, then this is only on hand for futurists and dreamers. The rougher and more natural brick looks, the better it will fit into the steam tank. Mixer and faucets choose "antique" brass, which looks like a "see species." Sink and bath go from the classic standards with white enamel to the variant with a bronze sheen. Some particularly creative steampunk fans manage to stylize a bathing container for a miniature submarine with a cut-off top and a metal ladder for lifting aboard. Commodes and storage cabinets are chosen from classic models that are decorated with the same tubes and gears. The lighting is left dim: there are enough reflective surfaces in this room that will dissipate it many times.

Conclusion

Steampunk is a unique trend that managed to find its niche in design, while its main competitors lived their short century of “butterfly” and sank into oblivion. Among professional designers there is a joke that the steampunk house risks turning into a museum. In fact, the way it is: the rooms are usually decorated so creatively, with a unique approach and maximum disclosure of the designer's imagination, that they can be easily presented as a stylish repository of exhibits. This of course does not mean at all that the steam bath gives the rooms “sterility” when it is terrible to touch the surrounding objects. On the contrary, in such an environment, a true dreamer and fan of fiction feels like a fish in water of alternative history, like the hero of one of the futuristic works that has become a reality for him.
