Warm and cold colors in the interior

Color can directly affect a person. Surveys in this area have shown the possibility of the impact of the surrounding colors on the central nervous and endocrine systems. Colors can soothe or excite, speed up or slow down metabolic processes. Paints in the environment have an influence on the formation of the character of children and can change the mood of any person. In psychology, there are diagnostic tests of color perception for recognizing deviations and obtaining a picture of the personality. In addition, psychology actively uses and develops the method of color therapy, art therapy in the treatment of certain diseases. Therefore, what colors to surround yourself in the house where you sleep, eat, relax and communicate with your family is extremely important.

When choosing a color palette, you need to rely on your own preferences, particular colors, and purpose of the room. For example, the palette of colors for the bedroom should contribute to relaxation and proper rest, for the kitchen are well suited color accelerating metabolic processes.

Determination of warm and cold colors

In nature, there are three colors called primary or pure colors of the spectrum (yellow, blue, red). When mixing, many of them come out of chromatic shades.

Characteristic properties of chromatic colors:

  • temperature (warm, cold);
  • activity (muffled, bright);
  • intensity (diluted or saturated).

If we talk about color temperatures, yellow and red are the colors of fire and sun, warm. The tone of the oceans and seas - blue, is cold. One color can have a different temperature, depending on which temperature range the base color (semitone or subtone) belongs to, as part of a shade. With the predominance of red or yellow halftone, the color is warm, if the blue subtone prevails - cold. The figure shows a color wheel, clearly showing the temperature of various shades.

Picture

Natural harmony and balance gives a combination of tones from the range of one temperature. In the design in the same way you can achieve harmony, warm (or cold) tones are harmoniously combined with each other in the interior. But in design it is not an axiom, the arrangement of contrasting shades in temperature can solve many design problems.

Warm color table

Warm colors bring home comfort and warmth to the interior, creating an upbeat mood. Warm shades will add light and heat to rooms with a northern or eastern orientation, they will “warm” the room.

Cold color table

The use of cold shades is especially appropriate in bedrooms, since such tones are serene, not energetically active, help to get ready for bed, tune in to calm harmony, relax. The tonal solution of rooms in a cold range will help to dim too bright sunlight in rooms with windows facing south and west.

Color and temperature

The tables illustrate well the conventionality of the concept of color temperature. The mixture of subtones and features of perception of an individual, give a different visual perception of colors (colder / warm).

Determine the color temperature can be decomposed into components. To change the temperature - add a uniquely warm or cold undertones.

The recognition of shades by the human eye depends on the wavelength of the spectrum, so:

  • long waves increase the heartbeat, blood rushes to the extremities, there is warmth - the color is regarded as warm;
  • a short wave makes you feel relaxed, the processes in the body slow down, a feeling of coolness appears - the color is perceived as cold.

Relativity in the temperature difference of shades is associated with a small experience of observing absolutely pure spectral colors by most people (in nature, pure color is rare).

Neighboring colors interfere with temperature. So, burgundy in tandem with sepia will give a warm feeling, with caramel - a cold color. Understanding of this phenomenon should be applied in interior solutions, it will allow to bring harmony into any space.

Create a color balance

The fusion of colors with achromatic (black, gray, white), gives a gradation of temperatures of the final color, changes shades, tones and adds shadows. So in the photo there is the concept of "white balance", which affects the illumination and the final quality of the image.

Neutral white can dilute cold or warm colors. If you add white to orange, you get a slightly cooler orange. At the same time, white does not have the magic that can make a warm cold color, only brings it closer to neutral. By the same principle, there is a gradation of color, deprived of temperature saturation with the addition of black.

In the interiors it is almost impossible to see pure spectral colors, they are "muted" gray, shaded black or brightened white. And of course, they use multicomponent mixtures of chromatic colors.

Combining

In interior design, the combination of warm and cool colors is extremely important. To achieve harmony in the room, you need to choose the dominant range (warm or cold) and add the opposite accents.

You can combine the shades of different temperatures correctly using other techniques:

  1. Balancing The principle of balancing one color at the expense of another, revealed to the world the popular combination of cold turquoise, warm brown and beige;
  2. Gain. An interesting variant of combining colors of different temperatures is deliberate mutual reinforcement. So cold emerald with a warm Marsala make both tones deeper and more noble.
  3. Muting, reducing saturation. The effect is achieved by using neutral colors for tinting large areas, as bright background colors.

Warm tones visually reduce the space, as perceived closer, cold - able to add depth, visually expand the room.

Shades of different temperatures can visually give the room the correct shape. In a narrow room, the long walls are tinted with cold tones, the short ones are warm, so visually the long walls are moved apart, and the short ones are closer. Having painted the ceiling with cold shades you can create the illusion of high ceilings.

In the living room

The living room is the central room in a dwelling, where they gather as a family, relax and have fun. In large halls of houses, you can choose warm colors as the prevailing range, and cold ones to paint accessories or choose a cold range for textiles. In typical apartments, the living room area is usually small, the space I want to expand, here you can make a palette of cold colors dominant. Often, when decorating a living room, neutral colors are used as the main color, so that the room is not boring, saturated tones (cold or warm, depending on the preferences of the owners) will come to the rescue.

Options for non-trivial color combinations for the design of living rooms:

  1. Gray, emerald, yellow. In general, gray is a good base color for living rooms; in this palette it can also become a base color. A few accent walls painted with warm yellow will fill the room with an atmosphere of joy, warmth and comfort. The sofa with emerald upholstery will balance the yellow walls. Emerald with gray decorative elements will help to harmonize the interior details.
  2. White, brown, red. Combining shades only warm or cold, it is hard to make mistakes. The use of white will help mute the active red, which in this tandem can be used for textile elements. Brown will be an additional tone of wooden furniture in the room.
  3. Gray, blue, beige. Blue will contribute to relaxation, it is a deep and noble color, its characteristics will be enhanced by gray. A warm shade of beige will add home comfort to the room.

These are just a few design options for rooms, you should focus on your own preferences, temperament, size and position of the room, expectations of spending time in the living room.

In the bedroom

The bedroom is a place to rest, rebooting the whole body, which will be facilitated by muted, pastel inactive, neutral tones.

If there are problems with sleep, the basic color of the bedroom can be made pastel blue, it is good for soothing and gives the owners a restful, restorative sleep. When combining cool blue with beige shades, you can get a harmonious and stylish room.

In order to relax, you can decorate the bedroom with ecru colors. This is a natural color, which includes yellow, beige, cream, but this shade does not imply the creation of a romantic atmosphere, so it should be diluted with elements of decor in active colors (burgundy, red in a daring combination with blue).

Choosing shades of brown to finish the bedroom is difficult to predict, you can use brown from a warm and colder palette. If the design does not add other colors, bright accents, it is worth diversifying the room with textures and different materials so that the room does not become too conservative.

In the kitchen

If there is a dining area in the kitchen, the tones for it should help whet the appetite (warm honey, tangerine, carrot, lime tones will do this task perfectly).

Thanks to technology, kitchen fronts are no longer made of wood. Painted MDF, the use of multi-colored films removed all sorts of restrictions in the colors of kitchen furniture. Having chosen bright facades, it is better to paint walls in neutral shades. In the kitchen, details are of great importance, to add coziness, you can compose contrasting textiles, dishes made in shades of a different temperature than headsets.

If you refuse the classic wooden kitchens there is no desire. Classic wooden kitchen set of wenge tone in tandem with a bright accent - skinali (glass aprons), blue, red colors. The blue ornament on the Portuguese tile chosen for the kitchen apron will create a nice tandem with the kitchen in the warm color of bleached oak. Many combinations of wood textures and multi-colored aprons are available.

In the nursery

From the temperament of the child depends on the choice of children's scale. For a fidget, extremely active and easily excitable, it is good to decorate a room in soothing cold tones using the marine theme of the decoration. For a sluggish and passive child, to “stir up” the baby, you can dilute the room with bright scarlet, carrot accents (using decorations, decor, colorful textiles).

Regardless of the gender of the child, in the nursery it is appropriate to use shades of yellow, which carry the cheerfulness, the energy of the sun. Applying yellow, you must comply with the measure, using muted tones or limit the area of yellow surfaces. For the boy, the companion yellow color in the nursery can be cold emerald or azure hues. In the girl's room, the yellow will be a tandem with a "cool" crimson.

Choosing a gamut for decorating a nursery, when the child is already realized, you need to be interested in the opinion of the baby, preferences. For children it is appropriate to choose bright, pure colors, but they definitely need to be used with basic neutral pastel colors.

In country houses on the attic floors, children are often equipped. The sloping ceiling in itself can "push", it is worth picking up light and simple colors for the design of children's space in the attic.

In the bathroom

The purpose of the bathroom is to serve cleanliness, all hygiene procedures are carried out here, so practicality comes first in choosing a palette for room design.
Black matte tile in the bathroom looks very impressive and stylish, but causes problems when cleaning, it must be taken into account when making repairs. Risking, you can beautifully complement the black color with warm pink and cool gray (combining tile, using accessories, textiles)

In the toilet, you can combine tiles with painted walls, laying tile in places where water droplets and foam are expected. Painting walls, you can experiment, for example, choose a warm olive and arrange with cold graphite.

Since plumbing is most often produced in white, the bathroom already has a neutral color to soften the brightness of almost pure colors. The option of combining red tiles, white plumbing and blue textiles, as well as decorative elements, can be unusual and attractive.

Conclusion

Cold and warm colors perfectly show themselves in interior design. By combining them in the same room, you can achieve various interesting effects, create an unusual space. You should not remain hostage to outdated stereotypes, saying that the neighborhood of red and blue is moveton and bad taste, the whole thing is in choosing a semitone and a preliminary layout of the palette on paper or in electronic form (this will help you to understand whether the idea of a combination of tones is successful or you should change the concept) .

Choosing colors for different rooms, you can be inspired by nature or the works of eminent masters of the sphere of design, remembering that the sense of measure and style is sometimes better than excessive extravagance (an excess of red can cause aggression). The decoration of the home, country house or apartment is not created for the pursuit of trends, here is the comfort, comfort.
