Choosing a mattress for a sofa to sleep

Should I buy an extra mattress on the sofa, if the sofa itself is usually quite soft and comfortable for sleeping? If the sofa is used as a bed, quite often, or even every day - definitely worth it! After all, it is the health of the spine, and, therefore, the whole body.

Anyone, even the most even and comfortable sofa, “sinks” with time, and it becomes uncomfortable to sleep on it. In addition, in most models, the junction between the separate parts of the sofa is felt, which does not add comfort to the people lying on it. To soften the sensations, many place a blanket on top of the laid out sofa, but there is a much more modern solution - a mattress-topper on the sofa.

Toppers are called very thin (compared to conventional) mattresses designed for laying on a sleeping surface in order to give it orthopedic properties.

Mattress for a sofa bed: scope

The sofa, operated as an additional, and often the main berth, wears out pretty quickly. The filler begins to "sag", the surface becomes bumpy. In this case, even if the filler itself meets all the requirements for good mattresses, it will, as a rule, not be placed on orthopedic slats, but on a regular furniture frame, which reduces its ability to properly maintain the human body in a dream.

A thin mattress on the sofa (thickness from 2 to 8 cm) is able to solve the following tasks:

  • Surface leveling;
  • Smoothing irregularities and joints;
  • Stiffness adjustment;
  • Improving orthopedic properties;
  • Increased comfort level;
  • Extend the life of the sofa.

This mattress is easy to clean in the daytime in the closet, sofa drawer or on the mezzanine.

Sofa topper: materials

The main requirements for the mattress, which must be removed from the bed in the daytime - lightness, relative compactness while maintaining orthopedic qualities. It is clear that the spring blocks as the basis for the manufacture of toppers can not be used - they have a solid weight and take up a lot of space, they can not be folded.

Toppers are springless orthopedic mattresses and are made of the same materials as regular springless mattresses, differing from them only in thickness. Let us consider in more detail the most common materials.

Coira

Natural fiber derived from coconut palm nuts. Koyra is pressed and then processed in two different ways: they are fastened with needles using a “flashing” method, obtaining a pressed koyra, or impregnated with latex — a latex coir is obtained at the exit. Coir, not treated with latex, is more rigid, its service life is less. When choosing a mattress for a sofa made of latexed coir, you need to consider that its rigidity will depend on the amount of latex. It can be up to 70 percent of the total, and the more latex - the softer the mattress. Coir is a natural, eco-friendly material, so its cost is quite high.

Latex

Hevea's frothy juice is called latex. It is a natural polymeric material, very durable, well-kept form, having the best orthopedic properties and at the same time not emitting harmful substances into the air. Latex provides air exchange, permeable to water vapor, and is also able to maintain body temperature, not allowing it to overheat in the heat and freeze in the cold. Even a very thin mattress on a latex sofa will provide the spine with the necessary support and give you complete relaxation. This is the most expensive material of all used in the manufacture of mattresses.

Artificial latex

It is made of polymers obtained by chemical synthesis. In terms of performance, it is close to natural latex, but it has a number of significant differences. Firstly, it is a bit tougher and has a shorter service life. Secondly, in the production of used substances that, gradually evaporating, can deny the negative impact on health and human health. These mattresses are more budgetary than those made from natural latex.

PPU

Synthetic polyurethane foam foam is used in the production of toppers quite often. The mattress on the sofa of this material - the most affordable, albeit the most short-lived. Its elasticity is inferior to that of latex, it is much softer, its orthopedic properties are rather weakly expressed. As a rule, PPU toppers are used in cases where the folding bed is not used very often.

Memoriform

Artificial foam with a “memory effect” is made from polyurethane by adding special additives. This is a very comfortable material on which it is pleasant to lie, as it minimizes the pressure on the body. The mattress on the sofa of memoriform gives the body a feeling of weightlessness. The main disadvantage is the inability to remove heat due to poor air permeability. Another disadvantage is the high cost, comparable, and sometimes superior to the cost of latex.

Combined version

Progress does not stand still, manufacturers are constantly experimenting, combining various materials in the production of toppers for sofas. The purpose of such experiments is to reduce production costs, and, consequently, the price for the buyer, while maintaining consumer qualities. Combining the advantages of artificial and synthetic materials, it is possible to level their shortcomings. The combined materials, as a rule, differ in long service life, have good air exchange, are permeable to moisture. Stiffness is governed by stiffness and the number of components included in the initial mixture.

Among the combined materials are the two most popular:

  • Ergolatex: polyurethane - 70%, latex - 30%.
  • Streamfiber: 20% - natural fibers (dry algae, animal hair, coir, cotton, bamboo), 80% - polyester fibers.

Orthopedic thin mattress on the sofa: tips for the right choice

Before you go to the store, you must be clear about what you need this purchase for. All toppers are different in properties, so you need to decide what you need, and in what conditions the mattress will be used:

  • It is necessary to give a sleeping place softness, or, on the contrary, to make it more rigid and elastic;
  • Will the topper be cleaned in the daytime;
  • The sofa will be operated as a bed all the time or from time to time;
  • What is the weight of those who will sleep on it.

When choosing a mattress for the sofa is very important to imagine who will use it most often. Depends on the required stiffness of the topper. The toughest and dense make coir. They are well align the surface, make completely unnoticeable differences in height and joints. Young people, those who do not suffer from overweight and diseases of the skeletal system, can sleep on such a tough “bedding”.

The latex and PU foam toppers will help to make the sofa softer, the most comfortable option will be obtained by putting on top a memory foam topper. PUF, from which the budget mattresses are made on a sofa for sleeping, can last no more than three years, while the weight of the person lying on them should not exceed the average. Those who weigh more than 90 kg will not receive from such a topper orthopedic support, and they will feel unevenness in the bed with all sides.

Coir and strutofayber, with all their advantages, have one major drawback: the topper of them can not be called mobile, it can not be twisted to put in the closet or on the mezzanine. But they are quite suitable in the event that during the daytime the sofa does not fold, or it is very rarely folded, while it is possible to take the mattress to another room.
